Yes, it would be absolutely trivial to make the composition you mentioned run as an effect. like i keep saying (and for some reason people keep ignoring), freeframe support will most likely make it's way into vdmx- we're working on other specs first because they're faster and easier for y'all to customize.

it's here, it's easy for devs to work with, and it's vastly better than the alternatives if we have to get the ball rolling, that's cool. quite frankly, i think it hasn't taken off yet simply because everybody's so busy asking that very question that nobody's making any fx- a gorgeous example of a self-fulfilling prophecy. team behind it, the filters are crazy-easy to write, and they're exponentially faster than anything you can put together with freeframe.

I think the question of whether or not image units will take off is sort of moot- the spec exists and is being actively groomed with the full weight of apple's dev. check the "stylize" and "color adjustment" categories- the noiseindustries fx are prefixed with "NI". The noise industries plugins definitely work, i just downloaded and installed them on my machine and they show up fine there's one unit that doesn't work because it's not compliant with the image unit spec, but it doesn't crash or anything you just can't create it. just keep in mind that freeframe/cpu-based image units will cripple processing resolutions (time-based fx on HD streams probably isn't in the cards, for example).Įvery fx spec has pros and cons, the only responsible thing for us to do is to look into supporting as many of them as we can in the order that gives you folks as many choices, flexibility, and pixels to push as soon as possible. We're also working on supporting the use of quartz composer patches as fx (there are several thousand of these freely available online and most of them will work with very slight modifications), and as mentioned previously, we're probably going to look into freeframe, just for the sake of supporting everything under the sun. we're not killing ourselves, writing fx is something i like to do as-needed or in my downtime. there's only about a dozen right now, i'm sure most of the sixty or so fx from gridpro will wind up getting ported by the time the beta's finished. in addition to the standard set of units that comes with os x, vdmx has it's own set of filters which we're always working on. there are a couple third-party packages out there if you poke around a bit (i think noiseindustries makes a couple), but nothing really to write home about. ironically, image units can be cpu-based, gpu-based, or (ideally) both- but vdmx blocks out the cpu-based units/all cpu-based processing right now for the sake of getting the beta out there sooner. Gpu-based processing can't really do time-mangling fx, it's their one shortcoming and the only reason we intend to support any level of cpu-based fx processing.Ĭurrently, vdmx supports image units, the fx spec that apple built into os x. : : ray mrRay Posts: 1268 Joined: Fri 10:38 pm it's faster, more flexible, easier to work with, and puts creative control back in the hands of the artist- where it belongs. got an idea for a shader you want to prototype? test the kernel in QC, you don't even need to launch your compiler. Want an RSS feed in your effect? no problem! want to make an effect that wraps the incoming video stream over a field of cubes, and makes the cubes jump to the audio? five minutes- tops. best of all, quartz composer is being actively developed as we speak- so it's getting faster/better/more flexible all the time, instead of just gathering dust.

QC-based fx have the potential to run at huge resolutions (HD shouldn't be a problem) and, more importantly, allow *any* user (not just programmers) to write their own fx (or customize others') without having to ever launch gcc. if there was a stable gpu-based version of the freeframe spec with a decent selection of fx, we'd consider supporting it- but right now, i'd much rather work on quartz composer-based fx. why anyone would express interest in an fx format that can't push HD is beyond me (if i'm wrong and we're delaying the implementation of a vital technology, someone please correct me).

Someone should stick a fork in freeframe- it's done. the only thing it has going for it is the fact that it's cross-platform- and it's not really cross-platform unless the fx are specifically compiled as such. FF is a joke- it was nice when it was written, but the lack of continued development has left it outdated it was slow a couple years ago when we put together gridpro, and it hasn't gotten any faster since then. We'll probably (*probably*) add support for freeframe on some level in the next couple months, but only because some people ignore any app that doesn't say it supports freeframe.
